The Institute of New Agricultural Resource

       The Plant and Future Agricultural Institute is mainly devoted to study plants via the multi-omics approach (genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics, and proteomics), to explore plant phylogeny and biodiversity, and to discover new functional components of plants. We are trying to resolve and understand the most basic biological problems of plants using their multi-omics big data set. In addition, we want  to provide the basic guarantee for future agricultural and biomedical products for human food supply and healthy diet. Our vision is to explore the origin and evolution of life and to develop "Super Plant Species" which would be beneficial for boththe environment as well as human health.

       The research projects of the New Agricultural Resource Institute are mainly concentrated in four directions: plant phylogeny and biodiversity research, multi-omics research of the medicinal plants,plant-root microbiome research,and “Super Plant Species” development.

       The key objectives of each directions are as follows:

  1.        1)The research direction of plant phylogeny and biodiversity is an important undertaking of the Earth's Life Genome Project (EBP), the world's most ambitious life sciences project plan, which is mainly sponsored by the Ten Thousand Plant Genome Project (10KP). The goal is to complete 10,000 plant genome sequencing in 10 years by following the plant evolutionary and taxonomic based timeline.
  2.        2)The multidisciplinary study of medicinal plants is a collaborative research under Medicinal Plants 4.0 project, jointly initiated by BGI-Shenzhen and Guangxi Medicinal Plant Garden. Its goal is to jointly complete the sequencing of multiple omes (transcriptomes, metabolomes, proteomes, etc.) of 10,000 medicinal plants. By focusing on the metabolic pathways and identification of unknown functional components of medicinal plants, we are trying to identify new components having several health benefits for humans.
  3.        3)Plant-root microbial research emphasizes on understanding the root microbial composition of agriculturally and economically important plant species. The goal is to build a reference dataset of the world's most important plants’ root microbiome, and to explain the interactive mechanism between them, and to define the optimal microbial composition required for plant growth. By establishing a controlled model of how microorganisms affect crop health, growth, and yields, we are trying to maximize food production for sustainable utilization.
  4.        4)The main purpose of research and development of “Super Plant Species” is to solve the problem of the food supply gap caused by the continuous increase in the global population and to satisfy people's healthy living needs. It is mainly concentrated on the exploration and introduction of energy-conversion-efficient, nutrient-rich, and stress-resistant plants, and they are then improved and cultivated using modern genetic biotechnology to develop the “Super Plant Species” suitable for large-scale planting.
